Lesson 9

THE POWER OF A WOMAN’S WORDS TO GOD

Power verse:

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

JAMES 5:17 TNIV

EVERY DAY WE HAVE the opportunity to impact the people in our lives, for good or evil, with the words we speak. We can breathe life into those in need of a bit of resuscitation or suck the wind out of their sails. We affect others by the words that come out of our mouths.

However, the words we speak to God have a direct impact on our own lives. God invites us to join in conversation with Him. Isn’t that astounding? The God of the universe longs for you and me to talk to Him. And when we talk to God, He talks to us.

In this lesson let’s take a look at the power of our words to God and His power that flows back to us.

1. What is the purpose of prayer? I think David gives us one of many answers to that question in Psalm 25:2-5. Read and record your findings.

2. God is sovereign. He is in total control and has a preordained plan. Prayer is not to change God’s mind, but to align our thinking with His. It is not a “wish list,” but an attitude of submission to God, communication with God, and receptivity to God. What do the following verses teach about the sovereignty of God?

Psalm 33:11

Psalm 115:3

Ecclesiastes 3:14

Jeremiah 29:11

3. God is sovereign, and yet all through the Bible we see God seemingly change the course of His actions because of someone’s prayer.

Read Exodus 32:7-14 and answer the following questions.

How had the Israelites angered God?

What was He going to do?

How did Moses avert God’s anger?

4. How do we reconcile the truth of God’s sovereignty with the obvious effect of intercessory prayer in the Bible? (“Intercessory prayer” is praying for another person or “interceding” for them.)

That is a question that will not be answered in this Bible study. As a matter of fact, that question has been debated by biblical scholars for hundreds of years. This is all I know: God is sovereign, and yet He calls us to intercessory prayer. It seems to me that there are natural consequences or courses of action that God has set in motion. For example: If you disobey, you are punished. Eve ate the forbidden fruit, and she suffered the consequences. However, intercessory prayer can stop the natural course of action with supernatural intervention by God.

Think about that last sentence and write down your thoughts.

5. God is looking for intercessors to pray! That could be you. Read Ezekiel 22:23-31 and answer the following questions.

Why was God angry at the nation of Israel?

What or who was He looking for in verse 30?

God was looking for someone to “stand in the gap”—to pray for Israel—but there was no one willing to pray. We can “stand in the gap” for the people in our lives.
